Pssst! Your iPhone 14 Upgrade’s Waiting For Only P999

Apple dropped its latest iPhone 14 series last September—and just like clockwork, every Apple fanboy and fangirl the world over went into a frenzy. This is to be expected, of course, from the tech-slash-lifestyle brand we’ve grown to ridiculously adore time and time again.

The iPhone 14 comes in four iterations—the flagship 14 Pro Max and Pro units and the base models 14 and 14 Plus.

If you’re looking to ditch your old iPhone or wanting to switch to iOS, the iPhone 14’s a device to really get excited about. TBH, though, you’ll still have to shell out P61,990 to get the base 128GB variant when you decide to snag one from a local premium Apple reseller—that’s still steep especially when you don’t have a deep pocket.

But there’s a perfect workaround to get your dream iPhone that’s both a win-win for you and your bank account. Local telco Smart offers the iPhone 14 under their Smart Signature Device Plan for only P999.

The lowdown

There are two ways to score your very own iPhone 14 from Smart. Pay a one-time cashout of P43,100 (that’s P18,890 less from its original retail price), or drop P17,800 as down payment and just pay P1,100 per month for a fresh Smart plan.

If you’re just renewing your Smart plan, you can choose to pay a one-time cashout of P43,100 to enjoy your new device, or opt to pay a monthly installment of P1,796.

Either way’s an economical option to finally upgrade, especially if you’re still sporting an iPhone X, XS, 11, or 12. Monthly plan inclusions are 5GB data, unlimited calls and texts to all networks, 50 minutes worth of calls to PLDT, and a free Apple Music subscription for six months.

Hello again!

Yes, the 6.1-inch iPhone 14 looks exactly the same as the iPhone 13, but with welcome tweaks here and there to improve quality of life.

First, it’s ditched the iPhone Mini design and returned to its “bigger is better” specs, adding a 6.7-inch Plus model, which is virtually the same as the 14, except with a longer battery life.

Available in five colorways (Midnight, Starlight, Purple, Product Red, and Blue) and powered by the A15 Bionic chip with a five-core GPU, the iPhone 14 remains IP68 water- and dust-resistant in a toughened ceramic glass and aluminum body as on the 13. Apple has fiddled with its battery life to give you almost an extra hour of video playback, from 19 to 20.

Bump up

Two of the most significant upgrades for the new iPhones are features that you’ll hopefully never use *finger crossed*, but are nice-to-haves nonetheless—Crash Detection and SOS Emergency via Satellite.

Both are clever additions for emergency situations, with the former detecting severe car crashes up to 256 gs through its new dual-core accelerometer and high-dynamic-range gyroscope, then calls for help if you can’t, and the latter coming in handy when you come to harm in remote area where there’s no phone service.

The iPhone 14’s cameras have also been touched up—the main lens now has a f/1.5 aperture with a larger image sensor, for a claimed 49 percent improvement in low-light situations for both photos and videos. A new TrueDepth front shooter also gives you autofocus for the first time and has a faster f/1.9 aperture for crisper low-light selfies up to two times, thanks to its onboard Photonic Engine.

There’s also Action Mode, which you can toggle on while shooting video for extra stabilization that works up to 2.8K resolution and 60 fps. As a final flourish, Apple has also bumped up Cinematic Mode from 1080p to support 4K resolution up to 30 fps.

Fun and familiar

Overall, the iPhone 14 is a worthy contender for your hard-earned money—boasting a familiar, beloved iPhone design with a few subtle improvements, making it a superb handheld device for the average user.
