If you’re looking for substantial on-the-go sound from something roughly the size and weight of a water bottle, then you’re in the right place. Introducing the Charge 5, the fifth generation of Bluetooth speakers from the popular ‘Charge’ product line of JBL. But we’ll get to the nitty-gritty in a bit.

Audio pioneer

JBL is almost synonymous to high-quality audio that you can virtually take anywhere. The brand has been making waves in sound engineering since it produced and launched its first products (a 15-inch loudspeaker and a high-frequency driver) in 1947.

Fast forward to today, JBL has become one of the undisputed kings of Bluetooth speakers for the mass market—and with good reason. Every wireless and portable JBL speaker comes equipped with consistent audio quality, waterproofing, a solid and durable frame, and innovative features.

Ahead of the pack

According to audio specialists, the JBL Charge 5 is even more durable and delivers crisper sound than its predecessors. For one, this fifth iteration comes with an IP67 rating, which means it could handle being submerged in water for up to 1.5 meters (for 30 minutes) and is also fully dust-proof.

This makes the Charge 5 an ideal travel companion that can withstand the elements. You can take it to the beach or to rugged hikes (or literally anywhere you might want to break some tunes) without worry. it’s also built with rubber feet on the flattened bottom panel so it won’t roll around on flat surfaces.

On its back panel are port for charging your mobile devices (USB-A) and juicing up the speaker itself (USB-C).

Under the hood

The JBL Charge 5 also comes with subtle spec tweaks. The bass driver’s a couple of millimeters wider and now comes with a 20mm tweeter—both have dedicated power amplification. The Bluetooth 4.2 from previous versions has also been replaced by 5.1.

Another feature that the JBL Charge 5 boasts is its PartyBoost button, which allows you to employ JBL’s daisy-chaining technology to beef up audio. Simply link the Charge 5 to other PartyBoost-enabled devices for a wider soundstage.

The same 7500mAh battery though still offers a whopping 20 hours of uninterrupted playback from a single four-hour charge.

Plenty of power

The bass is strong with this one, and the overall sound signature is cleaner and crisper. So you can jam to your choice of noise without bass distortion and with a solid balance between lows and highs.

With all these enhancements, you might think the JBL Charge 5 comes with a hefty price tag, right? For a portable and compact speaker that packs pure audio power, it remains accessible at only P8,500 (from P9,500) until July 31 in SM City Valenzuela and SM City Grand Central.

The verdict

For less than P10,000, the JBL Charge 5 greatly delivers in audio, build, and battery life. Want a small speaker with big sound? The JBL Charge 5 gets the job done.

The JBL Charge 5 is available in pink, black, blue, and red.
