Halloween is basically an open invitation to devour sweets. This is especially true for kids (those with diet restrictions beware!). But candies, chocolates, and licorice aren’t the only treats your little monsters can enjoy this spooky season.

If you want something more satisfying for snacking in between trick-or-treating or for your Halloween parties, we’re suggesting chocolate cupcakes. These moist mini cakes are a true classic, universally appealing, very kid-friendly, and can be easily decked out to match your Halloween theme this year.

Admittedly, throwing a Halloween soiree can be a bit hectic. Prepping and making sure you’ve all your cupcake ingredients on hand even before the 31st is key. Fret no more! Have all your baking essentials (and beyond) delivered straight to your doorstep via the SM Malls Online app. Just add to cart and checkout! You can even use the voucher code SUPERMONTH to get an extra P150 off on your delivery orders worth a minimum of P700 for the entire month of October.

Now that you’ve got that all sorted out (whew!), let’s get baking and decorating! Below is a classic (and eerily sweet!) chocolate cupcake recipe that packs a ton of chocolate-y flavor and made from simple, everyday ingredients, which you can definitely whip up post-Halloween or just because. We don’t make the rules here!

Solid, foundational recipe

Today’s cupcakes can be a jumping off point for many others. These can be easily part of your baking repertoire. And, yes, you can definitely play around with them depending on your taste or preference.

For All Hallow’s Eve, you can add or create molded toppers, special buttercream frosting or icing, or cute-creepy decor to these super soft chocolate babies. Sprinkles are welcome, too!

What you need

3/4 cup all-purpose flour

1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder

3/4 tsp baking powder

1/2 tsp baking soda

1/4 tsp salt

2 large eggs at room temperature

1/2 cup granulated sugar

1/2 cup dark brown sugar

1/3 cup vegetable or canola oil or unsalted butter or margarine

2 tsps pure vanilla extract

1/2 cup buttermilk

Topping suggestions

Chocolate or vanilla buttercream

Walnuts

Dark chocolate compound (molded)

Sprinkles

Steps

Preheat your oven to 350°F (177°C). This recipe will yield around 14 cupcakes, so line a 12-cup muffin pan with cupcake liners and your second pan with two liners. Set aside.

Whisk all your dry ingredients together (all-purpose flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt) in a large bowl until they’re thoroughly combined. Set aside. Shop the All-Purpose Flour 1kg from All About Baking via the SM Malls Online app for P610.

In a medium bowl, whisk your eggs, granulated sugar, dark brown sugar, oil (unsalted butter or margarine will also do as alternatives!), and vanilla extract until combined. You can get your Dark Brown Sugar 1kg from All About Baking for only P68 via the SM Malls Online app.

FYI, while this recipe usually calls for vegetable or canola oil as a softening agent, unsalted butter or refrigerated margarine can be handy alternatives if you'd rather not use oil or don't have any to spare. Get your Refrigerated Margarine from Wonderbake via the SM Malls Online app for only P44.

Pour half of the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients. Then half of the buttermilk. Gently whisk for a few seconds. Repeat with the remaining wet ingredients and buttermilk. Stir until ‘just’ combined—don’t over-mix!

Buttermilk usually comes in liquid form, but you can also use Wonderbake’s Buttermilk Cottage Powder 500g for this recipe, which retails for only P129 via the SM Malls Online app. This is buttermilk that’s been dehydrated to a fine powder and has a similar texture to flour.

Pour or spoon the batter into the liners. Fill only halfway to avoid spilling over the sides or sinking.

Bake for 18 to 21 minutes. Pro tip: Insert a toothpick ino the center of one of your cupcakes, and if it comes out clean, it means your cupcakes are good to go! Allow to cool completely in the pan before frosting or decorating.

Finishing touches

You can now frost your cupcakes however you see fit—using either a chocolate or vanilla buttercream. Sprinkle some walnuts on top for added crunch and texture. Get All About Baking’s Walnuts 250g for P165 via the SM Malls Online app.

For an extra sweet and spooky touch, you can bust out your dark chocolate compound and Halloween-themed molds. Dark chocolate compound blocks are typically used as decor for pastries or cakes—some shave them for garnish or for truffle prep.

While you can definitely shave your chocolate into slivers, we suggest melting it into your Halloween-themed silicone molds (think ghosts, bats, skulls, bones, coffins, witchy hats, or pumpkins!). Refrigerate to solidify and place atop your mini cakes! Shop Wonderbake’s Beryl's Dark Chocolate Compound 1kg via the SM Malls Online app for P237.

It’s really up to you (and your imagination) how you’ll transform your classic chocolate cupcakes into something scarily good—one that can definitely upstage all the usual Halloween candy from your kid’s trick-or-treat adventure.
